Antonio Underwood has been a member of the two time Grammy Award winning McCoy Tyner Big Band since leaving the Yale School of Music, in 1987, as a Tuba Major (Classical). He can be heard on many types of recordings in many styles or genres of music.
A Performer with Max Roach, Julius Preister, Delfeo Marsalis,the late Lester Bowie, Charlie Haden,Dee Dee Bridgewater, Cecil Bridgewater, Savion Glover, Eddie Henderson, Billy Harper, Steve Turre, ,Joe Lavano, Leroy Jenkins, the late Julius Hemphill, Henry Threadgill, etc., Mr. Underwood has been a cast member of Juan Darien by Academy Award Composer Elliot Goldenthal and Tony Award Winning Director Julie Taymor. He also has been a regular in the Tony award winning play, Jelly’s Last Jam, that featured the late Gregory Hines.
Tony is A George Lucas scholar to the Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television program at USC, studying extensively with the late Norman “Buddy” Baker, former music director of Disney studios. His composition and/or orchestration credits include recordings by Be Be Winans (Atlantic Records), Terry Dexter (Warner Bros.), John Purcell (Pony Canyon, Japan), The World Saxophone Quartet (Justin Time Records, Canada), Debut CD of Anthony Montgomery, (Transcontinental), etc.. Owner of his own published material (380), and a number of brass quartets published by TAP Music (Iowa).
Film scoring credits included: Rumbling of the Earth (Filmmakers Library) and Shadows of the Dead (Horizon Entertainment).
Antonio has finished his first solo CD "Tuba Mirum"(Tone East Music). Owner of Tone East Music publishing and productions with well over 200 titles and thousands not yet processed.
