Each tree grew for almost 2,000 years before falling into swamps and bogs from a natural phenomenon. These ancient trees are now being excavated from farm fields and ranch lands. The wood is only found underground on the North Island of New Zealand and there is no estimate of how much is left. Kauri trees are one of the largest species of trees in the world.
