Do you need an Advisor? Go BIG Can Help!
Author: Wil Schroter

Disclaimer - this is my explanation of a new service we've just rolled out, not a typical post.

Do you need an advisor to help you Go BIG?

Judging by the number of emails I get from Go BIG members, many people do.

As I always say, starting a startup is tough work.  It's even harder when you don't have someone to show you the ropes and help you avoid some pitfalls.

Now we've got another way to help you along - the Go BIG Mentoring Program.

I'm spending a ridiculous amount of time writing blog posts, news columns, and even books trying to to help my fellow entrepreneurs.  Yet at some point, they need more than something to read - they need a knowledgeable person to answer direct questions and help build a plan.

That's what the Go BIG Mentoring Program is all about - to put you in front of the actual people who can help grow your company quickly.

I wanted to base the program around my book, Go BIG or Go Home, because it represents everything I believe in about building companies.  If you've read the book or some of my blog posts, you pretty much know that I've got a very aggressive business growth philosophy.

Your philosophy of speed and growth may be faster or slower, but the principles in the book and the advice of our Mentors is about creating a structured model for growth.

How the Program Works

The Go BIG Mentoring Program partners you with a business mentor that will walk you through all aspects of your business, including the vision, growth, marketing, capital and management aspects of your company.

The programs work in either a group setting (picture a conference call with smart people) or a one-on-one setting, based on your preference.

We're going to start with a small group of 27 people.

I like small settings and I think once the number of people that join gets too big we lose efficacy.  We may have less than 27, but we won't have more than that.

During each session we'll cover the five core areas of the book (vision, growth, marketing, capital and management) and apply them to your business challenges.

View a full overview of the program.

The Outcome

Ideally this program will kick your ass.

I mean that in a good way!  We want to keep testing the limits of your thinking and your strategy.

For example, if you're thinking about dominating your local market, we want to see how you can dominate your entire region.  We're going to work on putting the principles of the book in your hands and getting your startup launched bigger and faster.

Ultimately we want to build Go BIG into a very powerful platform for growing companies.  I'm obviously very passionate about growing companies and I want to help others do the same.

A Few Notes

In the interest of pure disclosure, let me make a few things clear:

The program is intense.  If you're just looking for someone to tell you how smart you are and give you a "feel good" hug, you're in the wrong place.  There are plenty of places to get a some hand holding feel good treatment.  This is a boot camp, not a day spa.

I'm not your advisor.  While I'll be on some of the calls and participating, Northstar ThinkTank has partnered with us to marry their smart advisors to Go BIG members.  These are the types of guys I would hire to grow my company and these are the guys you'll be working with day-to-day.

It's a paid service.  The prices vary based on how much time you participate in the program, but it's not a freebie service.  We're looking for a handful of people that we can spend a lot of time with, not some mass-marketed program to just get a message across.

I'm hoping we'll find a few brave souls to take this journey.  I think that applying the principles in the book will create some really amazing companies in a short period of time.

Let me know if you're interested in joining up.  I'm always excited to get into something new!

Solid idea to send a entrepreneur in the right direction, what you are proposing would have been a great benefit to me early on. In addition I would also suggest to anyone starting a company to use their personal connections to find guidance. Everybody knows a successful somebody, to start it may be your father, friend of the family, relative or your current boss. Speck to them when you have a question, ask if they know a "........" expert. Over three years I have been lucky enough to gather a group of professionals who. See drive and passion in me, enough to remain interested or see an opportunity to become involved with or benefit from the company..."after I bleed out completely and prove I am not some flash in the pan dreamer". Notice I did not mention because they are nice guys and want to help. That's not to say they are not nice guys or just want to see me succeed but to assume that is their only motivation is naive. These are NOT people you call daily, weekly or even monthly for advice, "they do have businesses to run". These are people that if you have a quick question after beating the problem against the wall and you can quickly contact to verify you came up with the right answer, KNOW THE ANSWER. Listen to what they say, they have been there. Many of these contacts I only speak to one or two times a year, I do however keep them posted with QUICK emails every once in a while just to let them know I am alive. Also, have you ever herd the 1 of 10 rule? For every 10 contacts you make only one will be interested, learn to identify the right ones. For a startup the number is more like 1 of 100, so do not stop.

OK this is to wordy and I have work to do,

Hello Wil,

I do not understand how and even why successful entrepreneurs (such as yourself and Guy Kawasaki), would invest so much of your time writing informational Blogs and other business articles. I admit, most are well written and provide useful content, but how do you possibly find the time, and what motivates you to do so? Do you ever feel, as if you are "casting your pearls before swine"? Perhaps you write off this huge investment as a charity tax break, but more than likely and at some point in your career, you will become overwhelmed, or possibly severely bored with this all-consuming daily task. When this occurs, I suggest that you retire, hire a ghostwriter and finally enjoy the much-deserved Good Life!

It is obvious to me that the Think Tank program is a proficient and well-oiled-money-making-machine, that aspires to being compensated for their time and energy invested and they're nothing wrong with that!

I really like the idea of this site but was very dissapointed that the Northstar think Tank web site is so rubbish - many of the functions do not work! Not a great advert for start up businesses!
