Serial Entrepreneur and Go BIG
Founder Wil Schroter's Blog!
BrassTacks – A Raw view of Business Planning
Author: Wil Schroter
Tuesday, June 3, 2008
Here at Go BIG, we read a ton of blogs. Every once and a while you need a blog that breaks the typical news and advice clutter. BrassTacks @ BusinessPlan.com is a new blog that does just that by providing a real and raw view of business planning and business building issues.

The BrassTacks main blogger, Brittany Schaeffer, continually provides fun and edgy articles that helps digest industry news and events. Stories like “Web 2.0 Doesn’t Make Money. VC’s Keep Funding”, looks at the continual funding of valley startups that don’t have revenue models. Very true.
BusinessPlan.com also provides a startup resources tab with sources for business planning, funding and incorporation services. Because you have to get work done eventually.

BrassTacks hosts a quarterly executive summary competition for entrepreneurs. The best summary will win $10,000 in start-up capital. All they want to see is the executive summary, no need to wade through the whole plan.

Hey Wil,

Thanks for providing all these great links! There are so many valuable resources out there and it's good to see that people are collecting and taking advantage of them.

I'm an official Microsoft ambassador and right now we're really trying to scale up our connections with influential people in online communities like yourself. I'd love to share with you some of the stuff we've been doing in the last couple months to help women entrepreneurs; we're really committed to providing all the necessary resources to help women start, grow and expand their businesses.

We just wrapped up a women's entrepreneurial tour across the US called "Vision to Venture"; the response and turn-out was great!

I'd really love your take on these offerings we have right now.

Thank you so much, I hope I didn't overstep my bounds by directly contacting you. Definitely get back to me if I've piqued your interest - I'd love to share more info with you.

Best,
Ashley Baker

BrassTacks is an impressive group.  Video is the new standard. I think blogs are going to quickly be replace with vlogs.

I took a look at the businessplan.com blog. I wanted to pose a question to the community. Does anybody know any great Entrepreneur literature? I've been reading some of John Assarof's book's, most recently his New Book The Answer (http://www.readtheanswer.com/index.php?rta=blog) and it it fantastic. It really offers some outside of the box thinking for running a successful business, and growing it into a huge venture. Any thoughts?

Hello All,

Good commentary so far. Here are some of my keys to business planning:

1. Do you have the proper paperwork? This includes articles of incorporation, employer ID, a set of bylaws, partnership agreement, operating agreement and certificates.

2. Have you done annual filings in your state? These are required by the Secretary of State and, in some jurisdictions, the Franchise Tax Board?

3. Is your accounting system in order? A shoebox is not an accounting system.

4. Have your taxes been filed on schedule? If not, don’t ignore them. Ask for a professional’s guidance.

5. Do you have a separate bank account and credit card for your business? Commingling your funds is the fastest way to tear down the walls of your company. If you are successfully sued, the courts will not take the time to separate your business and corporate assets.

6. Are you representing yourself properly when you sign contracts? To avoid being personally liable, you should sign all legal documents with the proper title (officer/director) of your company.

7. Do you have a good “resident agent” for your company? This is the person, designated on public record, who will receive documents in the name of your company.

8. Do you have recorded minutes for your company? You need to document your decisions and maintain the records to establish that your business is a professional one.
